From 6 April 2026, if you’re self-employed or a landlord with income over £50,000, you’ll need to follow new HMRC rules known as Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT).

That means saying goodbye to manual records and annual returns – and hello to quarterly digital submissions using approved software like Xero.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT)?

It’s a new HMRC requirement for landlords and self-employed individuals to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates online instead of one annual tax return.

Who does MTD apply to?

From April 2026, it will apply to those earning over £50,000 in combined self-employment and/or property income. From April 2027, it will apply to those earning over £30,000.

Can I keep using spreadsheets or paper records?

No. HMRC requires you to use MTD-compatible software such as Xero. Manual methods won’t meet the new requirements.

What does the £250 setup fee cover?

It includes full Xero setup, Hubdoc integration (for receipt capture), connecting your bank feeds, and training on how to use the software for day-to-day tasks.

I don’t want to do my own bookkeeping – can you do it for me?

Absolutely. Our Managed package includes complete bookkeeping and filing support. You just upload your receipts – we do the rest.

I’m not a Viewpoint client yet. Can I still sign up for your MTD service?
